Sunrooms support leisurely living and increase square footage — often with lower construction costs than a fully finished room. If you're thinking about someday adding a sunroom or turning an existing space into a sunny retreat, here are some features to consider.
Combine style with function. In this utility room, the owners have chosen materials that are both attractive and practical. The countertops are a hard-working wood that lightens up the space, while the sink is deep enough for hand-washing clothes and scrubbing muddy boots.
Cabinetry. Take advantage of a wider hallway and build in some custom cabinetry for extra storage and display space. The cabinet in this photo serves as a display shelf for collectibles. Its neutral shade of paint keeps the hanging artwork as the focal point.
Comfortable area for conversation. Seating in drawing rooms should be arranged with group conversations in mind. Place furniture in a way that people can gather for chatting and no one will feel left out. This may mean pulling out those extra stools and ottomans, and chairs from other rooms, to create conversation areas. There can be more than one grouping.
