If sorting your books by color sounds appealing to you, I urge you to give it a try — there is something soothing about looking at shelves arranged by color, and it never fails to impress guests. If you want to try it, you will need to dedicate an hour or more (depending on how many books you have to sort) to the initial process.
Combine style with function. In this utility room, the owners have chosen materials that are both attractive and practical. The countertops are a hard-working wood that lightens up the space, while the sink is deep enough for hand-washing clothes and scrubbing muddy boots.
A colorful rug. If your hallway could use a pick-me-up, add a colorful rug for instant style. The horizontal stripes on this rug help a narrow hallway feel wider. The long rug, which extends from one end of the hallway to the other, has a dramatic impact. Can't find a rug that's long enough? Try sewing several of the same rugs together to create a faux runner.
Simplify your color scheme. Try to limit your room’s palette to no more than three colors for the entire space. “It’s best to keep it relatively monochromatic to help it feel less cluttered,” says Green. “Game rooms are busy in themselves with all of the entertainment items, so you want the rest of the space to feel quiet.”
